Five Tips to Study for Exams

Studying for an exam doesn’t need to be overwhelming or boring. There are many reasons why people sit for international exams and one common objective: to pass them. Get ready to learn the best way to study for an exam:

1. Plan a study timetable

Set aside some time every day to study for an exam: thirty minutes or an hour do make the difference. Choose the time of day you are most effective, is it the morning, afternoon, or evening? Nothing is set in stone; some people would work better in the mornings while others have the most energy in the evening.

Study at the same time every day to create a routine and after a few days, you will do it without thinking, without seeing it as an effort. It will become part of your daily routine, another activity besides working, cooking, or doing sports.

2. Have a study area

When you study for an exam, you may take lessons online or in person but you will always need an area at home that will be used to study. It shouldn’t necessarily be a room, it can be a little spot in your living room, a desk in your bedroom, or one spot on the table.

If you have all your material there, you will save time when you get down to studying: your books, your notebooks, your laptop, and your stationery. Everything will be ready by the time you are ready to start.

3. Focus on one task at a time

It will be more effective when you study for an exam to concentrate on one task or skill. Working on listening one day and grammar on another is a way of dealing with one task at a time. You could set goals such as practicing listening comprehension on Mondays and grammar on Tuesdays, writing on Wednesdays, and reading on Fridays.

If you know that on Fridays you usually feel a bit tired, choose the skill that doesn’t require too much effort on your part.

4. Practise with mock exams

When you study for an exam, it is not advisable to start doing mock exams from day one. Why? You might not get a high mark and that could be demotivating. After getting familiar with the kind of tasks you need to do as well as the timing, start practicing with exams in real-time so that you get the feeling of what it feels like to stick to time constraints.

5. Minimise distractions

This might be one of the most difficult ones since getting away from our phones, work responsibilities or personal concerns is quite hard. Take this time for yourself since passing your exam will probably mean achieving an objective you have been aiming at for quite some time.

Not being available for forty-five minutes, an hour, or an hour and a half a day doesn’t do any harm.

You will work better if you don’t answer WhatsApp texts or emails that pop up on your computer.
